Overview

Background

Over 80 percent of household buying decisions are made by women, yet less than 20 percent of retail and consumer goods companies are lead by women. Not us. We are a company built by women, for women.

Summary

Renzoe Box is a company that believes your makeup is more than a daily routine or collection of products thrown in a bag. In this project, I assisted to design the online shopping flow and conducted user testing. I also collaboratively work with the market team and engineer team to build the barcode scan feature which can help the user find the right items to fit our Renzoe Box.

Problem

1: How might a user finish their online shopping process effectively?

2: How might a user find the right product fit in the Renzoe Box?

Online shopping flow design

According to this Customer Journey Map, we are able to understand the whole process of our customer and the painpoints in each stage. In our next design project, we just focus on decision making process,.

1: Customize their Renzoe Box effictively
2: Find products easily
3: Get inspired.

In order to make users easy to find what they need, we provide the items by different categories. At the same time, the users are able to add the item by entering the full description or just use the quick add function. After the user added the item, we make their cart visible on the same page, so they do not need to entering another page to see what they have already added.

Mobile version design

By providing the different layouts in the mobile version. the user can browse the item easily scrolling up and down. Meanwhile, the hidden cart makes full use of the page which can help the user to check what they have already added the edit it easily.

After creating the design solution, we invite the user to test it. By conducting this user testing section, we received useful feedback from our users. She feels too complicated to finish the whole process. What she wants to do is gifting this Renzoe Box to her friend but she has no idea of choosing which product. From this point, we add a Gift Renzoe Box flow to make it simple and intuitive to provide a suggestion based on the characteristics of the user.

Barcode scan feature

Another feature I worked on is to scan the barcode for making sure the item fits our Renzoe Box. I collaboratively work with the market team and engineering team to create the database and make the prototype. Then deliver the design solution to our engineering team.

Here is the challenge that we meet in the process, our team needs to decide the tools we use and how to connect the frontend and backend.

A solution that can help us to create this feature.

Interface design

In this process, I create a wireframe and test it internally. According to the feedback, I iterated this design solution and deliver it to our engineering team.

Reflection

Think from the perspective of the overall flow. Users goals are the key.

For users, the website is like a tool, they hope the website can help them customize their own Renzoe box. The design solution provides enough information but is not user-friendly because it overlooked the essential needs of users. Especially, some of the users may be confused about the process if the information is overloaded. In this case, it needs to consider the ultimate goal of users and design from there.

Features should be included based on user study and business considerations.

Based on user studies, we can find some possible needs that we ignored in the designing process. From another side, we also need to cut some of the features down from the business side if these features are costing too much with no benefit.

Usability testing and heuristic evaluation are strong tools to unearth problems for iteration.

Don't rely on the first edition. Design is a rapid process. The earlier problems are found the closer it is to success. It is important to kind of letting go of your ego and focusing on revealing loopholes in your design with humility.
